It's so hard sometimes reconciling your wants and must do. It seems there's always something standing in the way of me painting; school work or house work or dinner preparations or some other meeting or some other... something ( usually my own state of complacency).
I need to paint to learn to be disciplined in my craft for I believe that's the only way true success comes; through discipline and determination.
I am overwhelmed by waht I want to do and what I must do. I will however, find a way to balance it all. I must.

Still-life WIP cont'd

The garlic has been brought foward to balance the size of the bowl and grater. Glazing will help to show highlight and reflected light. the cast shadow of the bowl also needs to be adjusted since it does not fully reflect the direction of the light.

Still tweaking the background.

It's good to challenge oneself with activities that take us away from the familiar. Every nce in a while we need to come off the beaten path and try a new thing. For me that new thing right now is painting still-life. What's yours to be?

Sketchbook cont'd

Kajama is a Wip from a picture that a colleague shared. I decided I didn't want to use the picture and worked instead from this sketch that I made.

Kajama WIP ( Work in Progress)
Oil on canvas paper.

This sketch was made on the spot. It's the view of the Oil refinery frm the highway. It's what I would call my fantasy painting. It's really beautiful at night which is when I want to paint it. I want to do it Plein Aire but it's not safe to stay on the highway to paint- especially at night so I am waiting and looking for the time when God will say "Now."

Our Northern Range is spectacular to behold. God is truly the Creative Genius. I did this as an Atc (Art trading Card) from this sketch that I made from a taxi one evening. I find though that I'm not satisfied with just that and I want to do more.

The Northern Range fascinates me. I don't know if it's because I love Cezanne's Mont Sainte Victoire series or just because of the vivid colour notes and plains that I see every time I drive by it. Whatever it is. You'll be seeing it soon, on canvas.

Hope you enjoyed glimpses into my sketchbook; into pieces of my world.

From My Sketchbook

Been doing inventory and stock taking and most importantly I painted. 9x12 Acrylic. No you won't see it here... yet but what I thought I would do is share with you a glimpse into my sketchbook.

Some were started, some were completed and some were ideas to be revisited. All of them brought me some measure of happiness being there.

This was my first sketch ever. I had just gotten myself a sketchbook and wanted to use it. It also represents my first plein aire (although I didn't know that it was) I just saw a beautiful rainy morning from the windoans wanted to paint it.

This was done on the same day but at sunset. I was alone on the beach after the rain had gone and the sun started to set. Both were just painted; no sketches; Alla Prima (didn't know what that was at the time either) The year: 2004.

This period marked a turning point in my art. This was when I started to take it seriously.

The Goal

Going out today. My aim is to start and complete one plein aire painting; something small: 9x12. Start small, end big. God is good.

Time to Reactivate

I must learn that to be successful I must first be consistent and disciplined in my creative pursuits. If I am not going to be consistent then I wll not be successful.

I made a to do list for this week. One of them is to review and update, so here I am. I am going to take charge of this wayward mind and undisciplined soul and with God's help, turn her into a well oiled, creatively vibrant and consistently productive artistic giant. In Jesus' name, Amen!
