My exposure to surface design actually left me with good feelings. Was a little apprensive but all in all it was not a bad experience. Here's my first quilt. It's a mono-print. Done using our local environment and culture. I chose dance as my inspiration: the limbo, Indian, belle, pique. I looked at movement, colour and energy of each. Very proud of it.

Been very busy with school. In between I took part in a group exhibition, started a new blog to do my part to fill the gap that exists in the art conversations in the media here. (You can check my blog out here) I'm also working toward another exhibition and painting and growing as an artist.

I'm posting for two reasons. The first is because I've been delinquent with my blogging so I'm breaking that right now and the second is to share some news.

I am now a member of the group Canvas Caribbean and have been invited to be part of an exhibition of works entitled "Shades of Hue" at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine.

Some of the most poignant examples of God's power and majesty can be found on the East Coast of Trinidad, where the currents are fed by the Atlantic Ocean and therefore the waves are high and they pound the rocks mercilessly; with a roar like a thunderclap. This is so especially during the rainy season.

It's a pity that more people don't appreciate the fact that God made the seas and it's there for all to enjoy. Soon a lot of places that have memorable views will be barricaded behind concrete walls; their beauty selfishly hidden.

I don't consider myself a portrait artist. Every now and then I cross that divide and try to capture a face that inspires me. This one is extra special. It's my father-in-law. I painted this for him for father's day. He didn't know the photos were going to be used for this purpose. All he knew is that he was being posed.

There is an eerie beauty in emptiness. This is what drew me to this area as I did my virtual walk for the June virtualpaintout of New Zealand. I was drawn to the simplicity and emptiness and of course the light that filled the sky. A nice warm up exercise I think.

Here we Go!

Well the fast pace of the semester is over. This marks the end of another year of study. So now I can share with you some of the things I've been doing.

For one of my final projects we had to create three paintings based on a field trip we took to the sister isle of Tobago. A beautiful island you should make visiting there one of your top ten things to do. here are the three pieces that I did. We were told not to merely record what we saw but come up with a concept based on something that captured our attention. There were some really interesting trees that held me captive and these three are created based on them and other places I visited. No working titles yet. If you think of something feel free to let me know. They are all acrylics on 20x16 and 16x20 panels. The first two panels have been textured with tissue and primed in red (Thanks Beverley for the idea).

I had originally started exploring the positive negative spaces but somewhere along the lines I started seeing other things and instead focussed on the different moods evoked by three of the places I had visited while there. These were full of a hidden fire and passion and held secrets yet to be told. So each panel tells that story

This first panel is an ode to Bethlehem Junction, a little village up in the hills of Bethel where there is still the practice of secret arts and funny habits (not the kind you laugh at) As we drove through you felt the underlying fire hiding behind the lazy atmosphere. The tree with the burnt tops reminded me of there. This is my ode to those trees and to Bethlehem Junction.

This one with its really red background was intended to appear other worldly and eerie. It was how I felt when I visited Luise Kimme's museum and studio; as though I had somehow stumbled upon another time and place; with the many statues and life size sculptures.

They say you should try not to fall in love with your artwork because it may hinder your ability to look at it objectively and be able to change things. Of the three I think though, this is my favorite. This one was done based on our visit to Plymoth, the place of the jazz festival and also the mystery tomb. It's interesting story of a slave girl who was the master;s consort but thought she was the wife, ended up pregnant but wasn;t aware of it. The inscription on the tomb stone is what inspired this piece. Look at the picture of the tomb and you'll see what I mean.

As I looked at the orange trees from Carnbee, I saw female forms. There was a clear form of one female lying along the branch and all the tree showed feminine lines. I started painting then started to see faces coming out. Got to tell you it freaked me out a little but I kept on until this is what I ended up with.

These are really far away from my style and subject matter but it's good to do that now and again. May revisit them and do some more work. Still have to name them. What do you think?

Here's the second piece. Both are from references I got from Tobago. I need to go back there and spend a week painting. Tobago is full of possibilities.

I experimented with this in terms of colour and how it was applied and also by not dwelling on recording but on mood and movement. This has awakened my senses and my imagination so much... Well you'll see what I mean when I start sharing the other projects with you. I can hardly wait.

Been busy. School and getting ready for May Exhibition. Thought it was time to share my two submissions with you.Here's the first one.

The theme this year is in celebration of forests, based on the UN's efforts to raise awareness of the importance of forests.

I enjoyed the challenge of painting these. They both took me out of my comfort zone and carried me in places I had never ventured in terms of style. Let's hope they are both successful in finding new homes. Sending up a prayer.

Busy day today. Worked on some of my assignments for art school. Never thought I would have to make a colour wheel or value scale for school, yet here I am. Also started scouting areas for my four panel painting. During one of my breaks I took part in one of Bill Guffey's virtual paintouts.

This month he's has posted as the place to 'walk', Japan. It really is a beautiful place. I now have a desire to actually walk some of the places my little google guy walked for me.

This is what I did today on my walk through Hiroshima. I worked with a size that I have never painted with 5x7. Also worked with painting knives which I haven't done in a long time. A little rusty but I enjoyed it so I'm going to do it again.

I started an art blog forv my form one students recently. (form ones are the kids that range in age from 11-13) They are really excited by the idea and so I want to make it as interesting an experience as I can for them
.
Teaching has changed so much since I first started; even art. No longer are you just focussing on the 'manual' areas. Now you have to show them art on the omputer. It's a learning experince for both students and teachers. I know I'm learning a lot. I find myself having to learn things I never thought of just to keep ahead.

I hope all my artist friends who follow my blog will visit the link below and comment or leave some sort of encouragement for the kids as they forge ahead in artist endeavour.

We should constantly seek to improve and to try new things. I always remember and quote to myself and others my first art lecturers words she told us "An artist is always hungry" Guess that's why we usually have so many unfinished canvases.

Submitted my painting Moonglow for the Women and Art upcoming exhibition. It's a national exhibition celebrating the contributions of women to the arts. I feel privileged to be chosen as part of this selection of women.

Here's another one of my experiments, this time with texture. On this one I used sea salt, oil pastels and acrylics. I like the sense of depth that came as a result. It's always a good idea sometimes to go outside your comfort zone and experiment with materials and techniques that you don't normally use. I am really enjoying the back to school experience. Very nice!

It's 2:00am. I've been working-Finally! Started this piece from photos I took last Sunday of some Haitian women doing one of their traditional folk dances. They were whirling and carefree. I seek to capture that gaiety on canvas. I was just so excited that I couldn't wait until I was done before sharing with you.

I'm working in acrylics for this project. Thought I'd get back into it since I have been immersed in oils for such a long time (No i'm not giving up oils). The canvas size is 18x22 and the next time you see this peace it will be completed!

Did a film and video course this semester. unfortunately because of a conflict with an other course could not fully appreciate what was going on. So many programs and new software to learn.

Anyhow, our final assignment was to create a video using pictures to tell a story. We had to use words, symbolism and some of the features of the editing software. Well this is my attempt. It's entitled:

"An Epicurean Adventure". We were supposed to use an experience that we had. Enjoy my first video.

Got behind and bogged down so I am not confident that I gave my best. Still think I could have done so much more. Time will tell if what I did do was enough to scrape me through.

It's always important to open yourself up to new opportunities to learn. In the middle of preparing for finals, I found myself having to attend a workshop dealing with integrating technology into the schools. Important subject yes, but not in the middle of finals and not when the workload is so heavy and intense. (Remind me to show you all the interesting and challenging activities from this semester). Anyway I went and was reminded that for everything you learn there is something else to be learnt.

Learning can be such an enjoyable experience if we allow ourselves to do so.

Tales of the Brush

Every painting has a story behind it. Some memory that forever links the artist to the piece; no matter how far away it travels. This one is no different. I started this painting as a 5x7 sketch on Grand Chemin beach one Sunny Sunday afternoon. The boat was all alone, almost on the sand, water sluggishly lapping around it. I became ill and had to stop. Even though my husband held an umbrella over my head, the sun was punishing me for presuming to paint on its beach.

Passed out when I got to the car. had to get water on my face and Limacol and all that drama. My one concern though was that I did not get enough time to finish my sketch. I did get enough info in the 10 minutes I was there to take home and complete on a bigger canvas.

I enjoy every painting experience; even the not so good ones. I also enjoy sharing them with you.

Back to the Waterfront

The day started out just right for a painting session on the Waterfront. It was meant to be an entire day of painting. Not only did I want to capture the Breakfast Shed, one of Port of Spain's famous eating spots, I also wanted to capture the sunset from that location. It promised to be spectaular.

This is as far as I got before the rains came and drenched me and the panel I was using. Had to run for cover. Will use the photos and this start to complete this work. Also plan to return for my sunset painting.

Plein Aire on the waterfront

Went out today to paint on the waterfront in the capital Port of Spain. The rains threatened but held off in difference to fellow artist Marsha Trepte and me. Was able to complete this beauty. It was good to be able to paint out. the weather has been very unpredictable.

This piece is the fourth painting for the month of August. Yes I know I haven't shown you the others yet but please keep following for peeks at the others.

Plein Aire President's House.

Went out today with fellow artist Beverly Fitzwilliams Harries to paint at President's House. We had to vie for time with the rain but I was able to get enough information down for a larger work before the rain chased us away.

President's House has a really nice garden and the house has lovely architectural features. Those of you who enjoy painting flowers and garden scenes would do well to visit. It's a really beautiful place for painting subjects.

Day 3

Sunset Sunday

Day three took a while. Life got in the way a little bit. However, for those of you who have been following along, here it is!

The painting is more or less finished. Just a few little touches to add to the trees and of course sign my name. I made a few changes. I took out the street light that was in the foreground and some other little things. I was determined not to keep to the picture that was taken out so I more or less ignored it. I was able to create some sense of cloud movement in the sky yet maintain that peaceful Sunday evening sunset feel.

Artisan oils have gotten a new fan I think.

Rejoice with me for God is good!

It all paid off in the end.

The first two semesters of my adult scholastic pursuit ( My reading for my fine art degree) were tough. From wondering if I would get time off to go to class, to wondering if I'd get all my assignments done in addition to all my responsibilities at work and home, to no sleep and frustration, to doubt: "Did I do the right thing? Am I biting off way more than I can stomach?" The list of qualms were endless and are by no means over since this was only the first year.

But I can rejoice.

I can rejoice in the family I have. A husband who supports me in all my journeying; artistic and otherwise so he sleeps on the couch to make sure I have company while I work. And works out the calculations since he knows I'm lousy with maths and measurements.

A daughter who in her youth probably doesn't get why mom needs to go back to school since she's already done this but will still make the trek to class with me and sit through it all and even get involved in my work and enjoy a few of my classes; once she gets a sub out of it.

I can rejoice in the fact that God worked it all out so that I could go to classes and still be at work and thereby satisfy both my lecturers and my employers

I can rejoice in getting my assignments done. Every sleepless night, every wire scratch, every time the plaster mould refused to work, every line of calligraphy I had to write for my storybook or do the illustrations,

or spend an entire semester drawing; an exercise that I'm not natural at but have come to respect as an integral part of the creative process.

It all paid off in the end.

I thank God for the 3 A.s and the lone B+ He was and is the One responsible for them all. So REJOICE WITH ME!

While the Paint Dries

Since my Sunset Sunday is doing the let the paint dry I decided to work on my painting of Natasha. Just to refresh your memory I'm putting a link back to the first sketch here.

I learnt to draw the human face by first getting the oval for the head and then measuring using 'head' measurements where to put the eyes, nose, mouth and ears. The wonderful thing about art though is that it allows you to experiment and find other ways of doing things so I started with the eyes this time and left the contour of the head for last.

I tried to capture more than anything, the atitude of the pose as well as some likeness. Hopefully I did that.

Day 2

Day 2 sees some movement. After letting it sit one whole day; a day in which I had to almost tie myself down to stop from working on it, I have added some more definition to my clouds, house and foreground. I tried to work on each area at the same time to create a cohesive piece. The large tree and bush shape on the right will be further modified so that it doesn't look like that big dark mass.

The sky and clouds are coming together quite nicely. Will go back and do a little more work since I want to show some movement in the clouds at this point, but not much since I want to maintain the freshness of the colours.

My pallete as usual is limited. I am using the primaries: cadmium red hue, cadmium yellow hue, ultramarine blue plus viridian and titanium white. I enjoy mixing my colours to create the variety seen on the canvas. I especially enjoy creating the neutrals and finding new ways to get a neutral.

Sunset Sunday Day 1

Just got my new paints. Winsor Newton Artisan Oils so I'm experimenting with water miscible oils. And what better way to experiment than doing a sunset.
I took some photos on the highway on the way home one Sunday evening. The sky was beautiful and awash with colour, There were some houses in the distance enshrouded by trees and shadows and some lights that just called to you. I must admit that these days I find myself fascinated by night scenes; the almost monochromatic nature of it; yet when one looks closely there's so much going on in terms of colour and drama. I want to capture that drama here.
This is the start. I toned my canvas with a mix of umber, alizarin and Utrecht cadmium yellow hue using acrylic paints.
When that was dry I then thinned out the oils using the linseed and a little water, then proceeded to block in my large shapes and also put in the various values and colour notes. I'm going to let this dry and then start building up my composition.

Closed Doors are not the End!!

I submitted this painting to an art gallery who had sent out invitations to their first mid-summer exhibition. They were seeking to introduce new artists to their gallery. I had hoped to be included in that slate since I am trying to establish myself as a professional artist. Unfortunately, they called to say that it wasn't accepted.

This started a whole host of questioning in my mind. What caused it not to be accepted? Was it the wrong choice of pieces? Was it that it wasn't good enough? Am I just wasting my time and efforts trying to establish myself in such an iffy industry? I got to say I felt not a little trapped. I felt like all my efforts to move forward were being handicapped by forces beyond my control. A little melodramatic perhaps but there it was.

How do you deal with the rejection? How do you deal with the experience of trying to move when you feel as though you are stuck?

Well I don't know what your experience is like but I can tell you what I did. Tears of frustration with my situation were shed then I squared my shoulders and looked forward toward the next opportunity. I chalked this one up to experience; the experience of remembering that nothing worthwhile is easily gained afterall Monet was on the brink of utter bankruptcy, Van Gogh died a pauper. That one may not be a good example I know, but the moral is they didn't give up on their dream of creating art and neither should I

Safiya Walking through the Woods

North Manzanilla is an area in my island home that presents many beautiful painting opportunities. It is still to some extent untouched and so is still unpolluted and fresh.
This is what we discovered when we went hiking there a few weekends ago. The rains had fallen so everything was bathed in water and the sun peeking through overhead. The air was quiet and subdued, the greens appeared greener and the air fresher. And as Safiya walked through the woods I felt drawn to the wildness and quiet of the morning.

Progress is being made! I am far from finished since I am relying more on my memory and knowledge of colour harmonies than the photos I took on that rainy morning. It is slow and frustrating having to stop to go to work and do other things when I'd prefer to be painting but I will finish this weekend.

I am enjoying the process and the testing of my memory of how primal yet so serene that rainy morning was.

Boats in the Mayaro morning Mist

Revisiting an old canvas that I started plein aire at the beginning of 2009 but was unable to finish. Decided to finish it now. Sort of symbolic of the direction I really want to go in where I don't make excuses for missed opportunites that I have talked myself out of because of fear of rejection and failure.

The irony is that besides the fact that I now will never know if I would have failed or not, I rejected myself by not taking up the challenge. So now here I am standing at a cross roads the potential for success or failure staring me in the face. It's sink or swim time and I want to swim. So i'm going to work on the old canvas and make it new the way it was meant to be; finish what I started then move on.

Cloudy Morning (WIP)

Made some changes- well a lot of changes. I scraped down the canvas and started over. I felt that I had overworked the canvas while trying to achieve the desired effect. So instead of having fresh, vibrant colour I had mud.

Here is the scraped down canvas. Even scraped down there are some interesting things going on here.

The new start has more movement in the clouds and less sharper edges.

I have built up the values that I want and still kept the movement; especially in the small clouds underneath Reminded me of some alien flooring.

This is where we are right now. At this point I pause to give the paint some time to dry so that I don't

overwork and muddy the colours. Again. When it's a little drier I'll start to add some depth to the colours. I am satisfied so far and should be finished with this by tomorrow.

Cloudy Morning (WIP)

Went turtle watch on Saturday night. Ended up hiking and sleeping over under a tarp surrounded by walls made of coconut leaves. Of course, saw no turtles.

It rained so I didn't even get to paint. Not Happy about that. What I am happy about though is that when I got up the next morning The sky treated me to a rainy weather sunrise show. Since I couldn't paint I opted for photos and that's what the next few paintings will be from.

This is the start. I'm working with oils. I have layered on the colours with glazes; just to get a feel for where the major shapes are. I'm working from a limited palette: the primaries plus white and umber.

Not quite satisfied with the grey I got in the largest shape so will be doing some tweaking there. Stay tuned.

Natasha 1st Sketch

Getting my feet wet again after such a long time away from the brush by painting my cousin Natasha. she really is a striking beauty and when I saw the picture I just wanted to paint her. My experience with portraits is limited to myself but there was sometihing about the way the light hit her face that just called to me so here I am.

The first sketch is done with Derwent drawing pencils I just love the buttery texture of them. From here I can work out any technical issues like the slight twist to her mouth and the correct proportion to her jaw, etc.

I also decided to sketch first since I haven't decided what paint I will use yet; whether watercolour, oils or pastels so from here I can experiment; play around with each.

It's so good to be painting again.

End of Year One

This is the cover for my storybook. I really enjoyed doing it as part of the Visual Arts and communication course. The story takes a look at one aspect of our folklore tradition, based on my memories of time spent with my grandmother in the countryside.

The course definitely shoved me out of my comfort zone, since I do not consider my talents to lie in the area of design and illustrating; basically graphics. But some aspects, like the storybook was a win win since I love to write.

Looking forward to what next semester will bring as I forge ahead to attain my degree. I dreamt of studying art for so long and even though it's not where I wanted to study I am making the most of it and having a good time along the way.

Thank you Lord for taking me through year one (by faith) successfully.

Tiles and an End to the First Year!

Working on the initial design which was inspired by sea weed that I saw floating in the mangrove.

Played around with the picture of the seaweed on photoshop. This chromed effect caught my eye.

Final designs. I used coloured cement to make the final products. I sought to create a measure of continuity with the colours as well as with some of the lines. Two different designs but still a sense of harmony.

As part of our final evaluation for Three-dimensional Design, we invaded the main quad at UWI (the University of the West Indies, St Augustine) Imagine the other students shock when they came out of exams on Monday to find the quad had been invaded by bugs of all description. We had to install them so as to get optimum exposure for them. This is just a little sample of the bugs on display.

There were some bugs I didn't recognise.

All in all it was a fun and interesting and challenging assignment. We worked with some materials we had never worked with, experimented with those we had so we could use them in a different way, learnt some new techniques, nursed all our cuts and bruises from the mesh wire and knippers. Basically, had a blast.

Group project for VART1405: Three-Dimensional Design. We have to build some sort of seat using platonic and archemidian solids. We were limited to paper and paper products and we had to be able to sit on it without incident.
We experimented with paper first then decided on bristol board.
These are just of a few of the images. Everyone was looking at Lydia as she sat down so no one remembered to take a picture of it.

The grey forms that you see are two little stools. They come together to make a little table to put drinks on or they

can also double as seats.

Been busy. Taking four courses this semester plus French. Don't ask me why. I was probably still on the high from the successful first semester that I allowed it to go to my head. Whatever it was it cost me five courses, in addition to my job, my family and my sanity. I have also started a new ministry; writing a devotional blog.
The irony is I went to art school to learn all I could about painting and sculpting and drawing and I haven't painted in months. Go figure.

Drawing doesn't come naturally to me. some people can sit for hours and just draw. Not me. I can paint like that but not sit with a pencil and draw. I have to work at drawing; work hard. So I'm very happy for the experience of Drawing 1. It has taught me not to be intimidated by the pencil; not to fear the line that isn't going to be administered in painting. I have learnt a lot and am still learning as I do my pieces for final assessment.

There have been so many challenges so far in my quest for artistic growth and development. But God has worked each one of them out in His way and I am thankful for the experience.

Just thought I'd share two pieces from my final assessment portfolio. The first one I am still working on. Got to do some tweaking on the mother's face. We had to take shots of people in gesture positions and use photoshop to turn them into black and whites and then draw. I lucked out on getting this mother and her daughter in an unguarded moment.

The second piece is from my themed work with the nude. I am looking at form and the effect of light on the body, especially the muscles. No males yet. Still a work in progress but this one is done! I just love these drawing pencils. They are like butter.

Still Here; Stll Standing

No I have not abandoned my blog and no I have not given up painting. I am still here. Right now I'm posting from my school's computer (which I really don't like using for my stuff) to say "hi" to you since mine has caught a cold and must be hospitalised for a season. BEWARE OF OTHER PEOPLE'S MEMORY STICKS!

I have some stuff to share that I've been doing in UWI ( University of the West Indies) as I read for my BFA. My drawing class is fun and I definitely love Art History- Its official. Will share with you as soon as I can. So bare with me as I deal with the patient and chomp at the bit to share with you what I've been doing in Art school.

The Journey

I'm thinking that this experience I am having presently; going after my second degree, this time in visual arts, trying to follow that dream of switching careers at this stage of my life will definitely be a testimony of God's grace and perfecting work in my life. The very labour involved in attending classes, the time spent on the highway, the juggling of home and family, work and school... I get tired just thinking about it. Is it worth it, though? Definitely!

I'm having the time of my life! I'm doing Art History; something I have always enjoyed and I am learning a lot about who I am as an artist. Drawing class is great and the Art Education class is also interesting. I am learning and developing skills that will help me become a better artist and a better teacher.

Most important, though, at the end of it all I will also have a testimony

I have made one more step into the unknown, on my journey toward becoming a professional artist. I have now signed on to contribute to an art blog as a guest author.

This will be my first occasion writing anything art-related that wasn't just about my work and my experienceas an artist and a Christian. Now I have to come up with how tos and other tips that will help other people grow as artists. Daunting to say the least but you cannot get anywhere in life if you do not step out. So here I go. I am involved in a lot of activities. From painting to writing to singing to involvement in women's ministeries, to practising culinary arts to teaching full time and from September, I am once more a student at UWI. St Augustine. I'll be going for my second degree this time in fine art. In addition I have my most important responsibilities as wife and mother.

Most recently (June) I added radio announcer to this list of activites. It was one of those thing s that I always wanted to experience and I felt I would be good at, so there I was.

There is some truth to the saying spreading yourself too thin. While I was announcing, my art was languishing, my writing was basking in the dimness of nowhere and my family, well they are very supportive. I had to drop out of the choir since I was on during choir paractice and I haven't seen the inside of a church in weeks.

I am the type of person who likes to be involved but I feel involvement must be, like everything else tempered by good sense. It makes no sense involving yourself in everthing and not flowing and being effective.

My focus shifted from where it should have been to something else entirely. I want to be an artist of note and a prolific writer. I view both of these as much ministry as working for a christian radio station. In order to be both these things I must give them their due. Therefore, I have made the decision to give up my announcer's responsibility to someone who will be able to give it their full attention.

It was an honor and privilege that I will always remember and be thankful for.

As I meandered through the little village of La Lune in Moruga I came across A cemetary; not a cemetary for people but for lorries, trucks cranes, tractors with and without the backhoe.
They must have been of use to someone at some point but now they lined the roadway, abandoned. Home for every kind of bush and grass and even little trees and whatever creature decide to set up home base.
Now it provides me with worthy subjects and a story to tell.

Today I joined the American Artists community. While I was writing my hellos something occurred to me. It was only early last year that I started painting outdoors (en plein aire)

It didn't seem such a short time.

I'm a perfectionist when it comes to my art. I've done many paintings that I don't show because I am not satisfied with the quality. I am sometimes very hard on myself because I feel like I should be somewhere else and I'm not there. When I look at other artists' works and see how they seem to capture their locations and paint with such pathos I feel the urge to hide my work even more.

Today, though, I had one of Oprah's 'aha' moments. It took these artists years to develop the techniques and abilities they have now, in something that I've been doing for only one year so if I am not where I want to be yet I can cut myself some slack (easier said than done) All I have to do is keep at it. Be prepared to make mistakes and do things over but be prepared to learn and move; most of all, be prepared to keep at it.

Got up this morning and decided that one way or another I was going out to paint. I was going to break the cycle of inactivity and just go out.

I chose Los Iros, a beach located in the quiet village of Erin which is south of the island, because I have been 'haunted by the little red and yellow huts they have for the life guards.
Well I didn't get to the huts cause the rain chased me and I canvas panels away but I did come home with two paintings and as a bonus I painted the full moon.

This is just a sneak peek at what i've been up to this weekend. The glaciers of Alaska are so majestic and beautiful. When I saw the photo that my friend Jilly-Ann took while on an Alaskan cruise I knew that I had to paint it. She gave me the picture to do just that.
I'm enjoying the experience of being there-even if just on canvas. (Will continue to dream of being there physically.)

This painting was one that I did a while ago (1yr ago)

It was done from a picture sent to me by a colleague during one of the Wetcanvas weekend painting events. I didn't like the barn and I was at a point where I wanted to stop painting frome photos so I ignored it. Was reorganising the work space and came across it so I took it out and played around with the barn some more. Still not totally satisfied with it because I feel it's taking away from the hay bales but decided to publish it. I don't even know where the picture is now.

Here is Miss Mary again. Slow going but a little more has been done to her.

Background has been added (although it may not stay that way) Some work had been done to her face, hat and fan.

It can be a little frustrating not being able to paint as I would like; with the frequency I would like but I'm plodding on and trying to make the best of what I have.

Some interesting things are developing cross your fingers and say a prayer that they all work out.

The sun made it's presence felt today. Not a cloud dared show it's face. The birds were out in all their glory and sang loudly and lustily, paying ode to a glorious day for painting.

My only regret is that I got to the Trust after lunch so did not get to capitalize on the day. Nevertheless, a good time was had.

My Hands are Tied wip

New Developments

Art has always fascinated me. I remember trying to draw as a teen; making little cards for my boyfriend from the little "Love Is" cartoons. He would laugh beause they would come out funny but he would still put them up.

The highways would bring such joy and pleasure and a hint of wistfulness. I wanted to paint them. I would wish for the ability to just capture the colour on the distant hill or the mood of the evening or what I call God's grandeur: the sun shining through the clouds on an evening just before the sun decides it's time to shine somewhere else.

God granted me the ability as an adult and I'm so grateful for the privilege. Art has become, not just a means of earning a living. It has become a passion and a voice. A tool that I can use to reach someone who needs to have an outlet or develop his/her creative side. I cannot think of doing anything else and if I do it must involve painting and drawing and yes, even sculpting.

I want to experience and experiment and dabble with different things so I bought myself some clay and I learned how to make an armature. I posted them so that you can share in the triumph and pleasure of discovery and also learn for those who may be wondering.

God has been good to me. I bless Him for giving me so much.

Changes have been made to the background in order to bring the focal point forward. The garlic has also been redefined and shadows added.

The reflection on the bowl is starting to come together.

The cast shadow has also been redefined a bit.

I do not want to overwork the piece so I am trying to be very economical in the changes and brushstrokes that I use. I find someimes in my desire for 'perfection' and to get the piece just so I end up doing more harm than good so I'm trying to curb my compulsion to fix. Just lay down a stroke and leave it alone.

This piece has proven to be a challenge, not necessarily in the technical aspects but in the length of time that I have spent on it because of other commitments that take away from my paining time.

It's so hard sometimes reconciling your wants and must do. It seems there's always something standing in the way of me painting; school work or house work or dinner preparations or some other meeting or some other... something ( usually my own state of complacency).
I need to paint to learn to be disciplined in my craft for I believe that's the only way true success comes; through discipline and determination.
I am overwhelmed by waht I want to do and what I must do. I will however, find a way to balance it all. I must.

The garlic has been brought foward to balance the size of the bowl and grater. Glazing will help to show highlight and reflected light. the cast shadow of the bowl also needs to be adjusted since it does not fully reflect the direction of the light.

It's good to challenge oneself with activities that take us away from the familiar. Every nce in a while we need to come off the beaten path and try a new thing. For me that new thing right now is painting still-life. What's yours to be?
