Just Slipping Along

One of the aspects of clay that really grabs me is the variety of techniques. It's like being a kid in a candy store, zipping from one end to the next; not sure which to have first. I am determined to try each one as I develop as a potter, honing the ones that attract me the most.

One of the techniques I really like and want to perfect is slip trailing. I became fascinated with it as I researched Japanese potters and discovered the work of Hamada Shoji. Then I saw British pottery and also contemporary American potter Alex Matisse and was hooked.
So here I am, plodding along, trying to find my footing; learning  how to loosen up and getting the right slip consistency.
Here are some pieces I've done so far.

In with the Old Faithful

When I started exploring the world of clay I spent time 'playing'with sodium silicate. I moved away because there were so many other techniques to explore.
I revisited the technique these past couple of weeks, with the intent on pushing the boundaries; not just brushing on the sodium silicate but applying it deliberately, leaving areas free, pushing the form out till it cracked through or pouring on the silicate or  adding it to slip.
These are the results so far. Can't wait to see them fired.

Pushing the Limits

I throw myself into any activity that I am involved in; especially if it's something I enjoy. When I started my artistic journey I sought to learn and experience every aspect of painting and drawing. I soaked up all the info I could get my hands on both online and offline.
Clay is no different. I want to learn all there is to learn then learn what comes after. It excites me.
I enjoy a good raku so my diy project was to build a raku kiln. This would also prepare me somewhat, for the challenges of gas firing.
I'm going to share my process with you in another post this week but for now here's  a snap of the first firing test.

It's the Rush!

The first time I saw a crystalline glazed pot by Matt Horne, I wanted to make a glaze like it. I was fascinated by the energy, depth and light I saw reflected in the crystals. Almost as if they were moving.

I am still a novice at mixing glazes so I bided my time until I was a little more comfortable before embarking on this adventure. I read books, looked at videos, listened to other crystelieri.

This week was C-day (you get it?) I used one of Fara Shimbo's recipes from her book "Crystalline Glazes". I made three test batches: one base, one with cobalt and manganese, the third with copper, iron oxide and manganese. After a nerve racking, nail biting firing I have this to show.

Sorry no pictures of the making. All I have are the results? I will let them speak. Clearer pictures later.
Am I going to try this again? Oh hell yes!

Sometimes You have to Start Over

Made these three forms and even though they were slow drying, they all have cracks. So they are headed for the reclaim bucket and I am starting over. Sometimes that's what you got to do.
On the bright side, (cause you got to look for all things working together for good) I get to practise and correct the areas that lead to the cracking in the first place, which helps me to improve and grow. So to coin Simon Leach, "Keep practicing!"

Friday Up!

It's Friday! Yay!! That meams my usual Saturday night throwing session is in effect. Lots happening here so stay tuned to this page.
The gas kiln is on hold as I await the arrival of ordered parts.  In the meantime I have resumed throwing and new work has been added to my Etsy shop and the Shop at the Normandie.
Here are a few of the pieces from the last firing

Full House on Bisque Monday

For the first time since I started making pottery I have almost 100 pieces in the kiln for the bisque firing. (The climbing cats that I have, helped lower the number. They are very selective).
Really excited about this firing cycle and this set of pots. Played with additives in the clay and new ( to me)  shapes. Stay tuned for the glaze report where more experiments take place.

I joined Weebly in 2011 Started working on the site last year and published in December. For whatever reason I didn't announce it. So today I am showing you my trial webpage.

I will use the free site for a while as I gauge the traffic and potential for using my domain name. So take a look and tell me what you think.
I look forward to your feedback.

I have to confess I have been delinquent with my blog. I posted to instagram,  Facebook page  but my blog has been seriously neglected.
Here begins re-activation.

Look out for a new blog post every two days, that talks about my process, ideas and experiments.
