Wednesday Evening

Played with slip and large forms today in preparation for the 18" forms I have to make for my client.
Also altered the form. I think it looks good like this. what do you think?
Be blessed,

Well I haven't updated you in a while but fear not, It wasn't neglect. I have been so busy, so many things happening. The year just seems to have picked up and sped up.
The pictures you're seeing are from two commissions that I am working on presently. The sake set is almost finished. The other one is a set of storage jars.

I also took part and am taking part in a few arts markets all of which so far have been successful. Exhibition coming up for UWI Visual Arts Programme 25th Anniversary Celebrations and Show and Sell is this Friday. I am being challenged and I am growing as an artist.
So I am really enjoying the closing months of this year. What a wonderful way to head into a new one. Thanks go to God my Father.

I was interviewed by the Trinidad Express last Friday. The article came out today. This reporter saw my work and wanted to speak with me about it. So humbled by this opportunity.
So many wonderful and un-expected things happening in my art world. Thank you Lord! And thanks Jacqui for sharing my artwork with the wider public.

What's New

Made some changes to my blog appearance today. Meanwhile I am counting down the days to the start of my studio construction. Hope nothing changes that plan.
October 7th will be my first time at the Arts Market. Looking forward to that too. So stay tuned to all the happenings. Will be video taping the studio construction. Look out for it.

First attempt at pit firing

My  first pit firing experience. It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. Lot of smoke. Was concerned about my neighbours. Pit firing should not be done in residential areas. Will try the barrel next. Hopefully it won't be as smoky since I'll have a chimney. Wish the pieces had a lot more color on them but I still enjoyed the experience.

Glazed pieces

Took out the last of the glazed pieces today. There were some winners and some not so winning.  You can view the pieces here. Now I am waiting for the next set of work to dry and be bisque fired.

On another note, I am soon the be the proud owner of a kiln. It's second hand but that's okay I am just so happy. God is good!
I also did my first pit fire. About two pieces pleased me. The rest I want to throw them back in. I will be doing some more research, watching soe more youtube videos and trying it again.

Yunomi,Cups and Rio

Friday I was in the zone. Decided to do a video of me throwing yunomis and mugs. got into the video when the battery started to die.
Thought I would have been able to use the 16 minutes of footage but stopped short when I realised that the work tee-shirt had a massive hole under the arm that showed every time I moved. No way am I using that. So I made a still. Enjoy!

Glaze pieces

Really busy week. Quite fulfilling. I have been experimenting with glaze making and today was the result show. Took out a few from the kiln and got to say Woo Hoo! What a rush!
These are just a sample of what's been going on here. Enjoy.
Remember you can message me if you are interested in any of the pieces seen here,

Seeing in Colour!

So many interesting things in the world of ceramics. I recently saw a video that show a Chinese potter working with colored clay. Of course I wanted to try it out.
My version of course is nothing like his but it was a wonderful technique. Thanks to my friend Aisha Provoteaux Webster for documenting it when I wasn't looking. Here is the link to her blog

Glaze Tests and Rainy Days

Chawans Baby!

used iron oxide and porcelain slip
My fascination with pottery and this is probably true with most potters, is inspired in part by the  work of the Chinese and Japanese potters. The pottery of the Yuan and Shang Dynasties are especially beautiful to me. so when I saw their chawans I knew that I would want to throw one. Got to tell you it was a little intimidating because of their history and ceremonial meaning and their beauty- especially in their asymmetry. Nevertheless, I did it yesterday. Woo Hoo! what a rush! I did eight- yes I said eight. And I made video which I will upload later on when I have edited. You know I wouldn't leave you without a peek so here it is
Love the marbling on this one

Remember it's just a peek. My first chawans. Most of them are textured. Loved doing that.

Here are two more pieces that were taken out of the kiln. They are both wheel thrown using low fire (^ 04)  white. I love the colours that I got from these; especially the bottle which reminds me of smoke.

However, the vase didn't have such a nice time in the kiln and I now have a vase that's stuck to it's stand and if you look closely you'll see evidence of pinholes. I still like what happened to the colour and will try to rescue it from the base. Any suggestions are welcome.

Stepping Up

I have increased the amount of clay I throw with. I can now control 5lbs of clay on the wheel and probably a little more. With this has come a growth in my confidence so I am trying new ideas and concepts.
I now want to mix my own glazes and have started burning some wood to collect the ash so that I can make up a simple glaze. I am also toying even more with texture and shape. Here are three pieces that I worked on yesterday and trimmed and shaped today. They are all done in Macabee cone 5 porcelain

This bowl was done with bits of clay that were treated with iron oxide, stuck to the inside. On top of this is added slip with iron oxide and cobalt carbonate. Crossing my fingers for the result.

with this vase I played with shape and texture. I love the contrast from thin to bulbous, from straight to flared. I used the plastic rib to create the texture on the surface. I think this one is my favorite of the three.

This one I also played with shape. I created an odd- shaped jug. Two things happened that changed the form. Firstly, While trimming and cleaning I looked at the handle and saw a face so I decided to play with that some more. I went too low in my carving and ended up having to cut out the holes. Then while I was cleaning the spout, I ended up breaking it. Was about to throw it out when I decided to keep it. Who knows...

Monday, Tuesday

The results of my experimenting with slip and oxides
Pulling up 5 1/2 lbs of clay for the first time

The result!
I am in the zone. Monday I started experimenting with slip and oxides and adding texture. Expanding the form has been a challenge for me but yesterday it all came together.
Then today, I decided to expand my activities and threw a large (large for me) piece of stoneware- 51/2 lbs. I am waiting for them to dry enough so they can be bisque fired and glazed. Will post individual pieces later this week.

My little sake bottles for the person who doesn't drink sake.
I had a totally satisfying day today. I threw and ended up with six pieces, trimmed and modified work already done and got two beautiful bottles from the kiln. Of course I have to share them all with you.
cone 10 porcelain
Made two of these. One with cone 10 and the other with cone 5 porcelain.

altered this bottle form. Very cool!
It was a bottle kind of day.
Here"s another bottle form- a genie bottle. This one has a cover.

Here it is from a different angle.

Played with distorted forms as well/. This is my 'drunken' chalice

And, not to be outdone, here are the two bottles that were fired. I like these so much I'm going to do a series of black bottles-at least, black on the inside.

What's New Monday

and more altered forms with slip and oxides. Can't wait!

Spent the morning looking at videos of past potters. Immersed myself in the work of Lucie Rie, Bernard Leach, Isaac Cotton, Eva Zeisel and of course looked at pics of my own mentor Gloria Harewood.
Felt so inspired afterward that I went to work making some  clay tools out of a piece of bamboo that I had been saving for that purpose.
I realised something in my ceramic journey and that is I love textural effects on my pieces. I am always trying to find ways to include this in my work. I am especially fascinated by the process of adding slip so these tools were made with this in mind.
What a fun and fulfilling Sunday! I am eager for Monday so I can try out my new tools.

June Pots

Another month is here and so are new pots. Did some glazing fired at ^04. Will post pictures of those next week. Two new ^5 porcelain vases have been added to the set. I am preparing a number of porcelain pieces at cone 10 and 5, so they can all be glazed and fired in one load each.

I played around with waving the top of these vases. This is the tallest I've ever thrown. (Yay me!) It's a little wonky but that just adds to the personality.

Seeing Double II

Went up today to trim and carve my double-walled vase. This was my first lesson. I needed to trim and carve the day after. Had some breakage when handling the delicate clay but was still satisfied with my first attempt.

Here they are. My first double-walled vase. Need better pictures. Quite pleased with it, though in spite of the hiccups.
Onward to the next one
